Lukla [9,240ft]
May 03, 2002

These older journal entries were hastily typed in at local cybercafes where I was paying by the minute.  Please excuse grammar mistakes or typos.

One of the Gorak Shep card players caught up with me on the trail and told me a story.  If I had made it to base camp, it would have been interesting, but not necessarily the experience I was looking for.  The meteorologists who I most likely would have walked with arrive in camp and ask to talk to the climber who is supposed to put their weather station on the mountain.  "Sit down" they are told.  And then "Peter is dead".  Just hours before he had fallen into a ravine.  The press releases hadn't yet been writing the camp was in a bit of chaos.  It would have been interesting, but I think I'm just as happy telling that story second hand.

Three hours to my final destination of Lukla and I finally sprain that ankle which has been in a bit of trouble since day one of this trek.  It's not a bad sprain and as things go the timing couldn't have been better.  I limp into Lukla, find a room, buy and plane ticket and then head out for a drink.  After 2 months of near sobriety, my style is slipping.  The order certainly should have been drink, then room and ticket.  Civilization - Waves Pub - a proper bar.  Liquor and a mirror on the wall behind the bar.  A pool table and disco ball.  Not much of a scene though.  I'm the only customer and the town has a 6:30 curfew.  It does feel good to have a drink once again.  Well, two.  It's happy hour and two for the price of one.
