Palace Restaurant Gharanna
Dec 20, 2000

These older journal entries were hastily typed in at local cybercafes where I was paying by the minute.  Please excuse grammar mistakes or typos.

Palace Restaurant Gharanna
The taxi driver lets me off and someone else leads me down dark alleys towards the restaurant.  I give my guide a tip of $1 and then head inside.  It's 9pm and the restaurant is empty.  There are no patrons inside, just the band a few waiters.  The staff is a bit, just a bit unprepared.  The waiter throws on his fez and rushes over.  The band start playing.

A muslim palace with forty foot ceilings and the band starts playing as you walk in.  This is a level of almost surreal luxury that I have never before experienced.

I'm almost embarrassed as they bring out 7 plates of appetizer for me.  I had a tough time choosing between the restaurant that the guidebook hinted had better food and this restaurant which seemed to have the better atmosphere - 16th century decor, the Kennedy's and the Kahns have dined here, and such.  I think that I made the right choice.  I still can't get over the feeling of the band starting playing as I approached.

The waiter comes over to tell me a bit about the restaurant.  The palace was given to the Bashir who oversaw Marrakesh.  The picture on the wall, on both walls, shows Mohammed V when he came and ate here.  I'm not quite sure who he is, but I'd assume he is rather important since the main street and one of the major squares are both named after him.

Overall, the food was good, but far from great.  However, I will strongly recommend that everyone have dinner in a palace at least once if their lives.  Now, I have to decide if I stay one more night and try the other restaurant or if I head back to Spain on the 1am train planned.
