Phakding -> Namche
Apr 19, 2002
The first day I wrote that I was fully occupied between watching the view and watching my step. Now I'm spending too much time watching the view and not enough time watching my step. I'm assuming that some day soon, I'll be looking up at a mountain, trip and fall right on my face.
It's nice being strong and fast. I pass all of the tourists that just got off a plane and make a quick ascent up to Namche at 12,000 feet. I did make a mistake, not eating at the bottom of the hill. There is no food between the National park entrance and Namche and I had finished all of my M&M's. Hunger keeps me moving and I arrive in Namche for lunch at 1pm.
There's not much going on, but Namche is a cool little town. There are two pool halls and a couple of decent bakeries. Somewhere before the airport, I left Communist territory. In Namche, there are no communist flags, but instead a large army presence.
It's great to finally be among the mountains. You'll be watching clouds part and where you expect to find sky, you'll be surprised to see instead a mountain soaring up towards the heavens. Reaching Namche concludes the first part of this journey. I made it to Namche. I made it to the mountains. From here I'll be spending the next three weeks above 12,000 feet roaming the mountains, glaciers and lakes of the Khumba valley.
9am depart -- 1pm arrival
